Woods Syllabus 2008-09

 

 

Philosophy:

I believe that every student can improve themselves through education and has the innate capability to learn.It is also my belief that every student has something positive to contribute to the learning process.

 

Classroom Code of Conduct:

School regulations will and must be enforced.In addition the following will apply:1.No weapons or facsimiles of weapons can be made.2.Students will be respectful of the facility.3.Students will be respectful of all others& their property.4.Students will use their time efficiently.5.Students need to be seated when the bell rings or will be considered tardy.6.All projects must be approved prior to the taking or cutting of wood.7.No student is to take wood out of the lumber room with out prior approval.8.The throwing of any objects is not permitted.

 

Subjects Covered:

Employability skills,blue print reading & communication, health & safety, hand tool uses, cabinetmaking joinery, abrasives, adhesives, project cost estimation, project layout,machine & tool safety, wood species identification & uses (solid stock and plies), production procedures, hardware uses, finishes, and some of the advanced techniques in the fabrication of: furniture, casework, trim, doors, counters.

 

Students will need:pencils, erasers, notebook, & Positive Mental Attitude (P.M.A.).

 

Course Fee:$30.00 fee per semester (non-refundable); however, students will spend more money, some considerably so as project sizes varies and this fee does not include wood or hardware.

 

Grading Scale:A = 100-93C+ = 79-77F = 59-0

A- = 92-90C = 76-73

B+ = 89-87C- = 72-70

B = 86-83D+ = 69-67

B- = 82-80D = 66-60

Grading:

A. Work Expectations:

1. Steady progress must be made in class

2. Regular attendance

3.Fourprojects must be completed

4. Students may wish to come in before or after school for extra lab time

 

B. Grades:Will be based on written work, tests, projects, & understanding of woodworking.

60%= Projects, & understanding of wood working processes

10%= Test scores, & written work

15%= Clean up

5% =Citizenship

5% =Leadership(individual, group & community)

5% =Safe conduct

 

Technique of Instruction:lecture, demonstration, & hands on monitored by instructor.

 

Tardiness:Thefollowing procedure will be used for dealing with tardiness:

1.Offenses 1-4, students will receive a verbal warning.

2.5th offense, 60 minutes detention.

3.Offenses 6-8 +, will be referred to the office.

 

Leadership:Leadership & Clean Up is 20% of grade

 

Leadership Activities in Class:

All vocational courses are required to provide some form of leadership activity with in the context of the class.In this class leadership will take on three forms: individual, group and community /career opportunities. In group and individual leadership activities students will be required to participate in the clean up organization of the shop. Each student will rotate through the assigned clean up jobs every two weeks taking on both individual responsibilities and eventually responsibility for the entire group.Every student during the course of the year will serve as the foreman in charge of starting clean up every day and in scoring the other students based on whether or not they completed their assigned task. Students will also serve as a member of the clean up crew rotating though each of the jobs in the shop. This is a list of clean up jobs that can be lengthened or shortened to match the number of students in the class:

Students will also participate in career exploration in an effort to make students aware of the opportunities available in industry today. We will have guest speakers come into class from a variety of related industry. Students will be required to complete a career interest survey, fill out a job application form, write a resume and locate data on job availability, training requirements, and wages.
